Ann was born about 1805 in Woodhouses, Yorkshire. By 1831 she had moved to Ockbrook, in Derbyshire. It may not be irrelevant to note that at this tme, Ockbrook contained a largish number of inhabitants of a strong rreligious persuasion, some of whom were to emigrate to the Americas, particularly to Ohio and Salt Lake City. It might also be of interest to note that in 1841 Ann and her husband, Joseph Hooley, have, living with them, Joseph's brother Samuel, a Methodist Minister: Samuel came to be known not only for his strong religious fervour, but also, unfortunately, for his fits of depression. After Joseph, her husband's death in 1851, Ann, now aged 48 [sic] continued working as a Grocer, and "took in lodgers"; Edward Shepherd a widower aged 57, framework knitter, three other Shephers, and a William Slater were all living under her roof during the 1851 Census.
