Notes
Note N167Porter Clark farmed in the Matkins community of Harrison County. The farm, about 180 acres, was located north of McFall and south of New Hampton, Mo. Porter raised hogs, cattle, sheep, hay, and corn. He plowed and harvested the fields with a team of draft horses named Maud & Bess, and riding horses Blanch, Blaze, and Topsie . Porter donated an acre of land on the north side of the family home for the Bodam School yard. The one room school had about 40 students in grades 1 to 8. All of the Porter Clark kids completed their first 8 grades in this school. James Oren Clarks future wife Yavahn Ward was an eighth grade teacher in 1931 and 1932 and had as a student Edith Leotha Clark, her future sister in law. The building was located on the other side of the horse lot. Edith Leotha wanted a horse to ride to school because all of her classmates had horses they rode. Porter said no horse. Porter also worked as a Matkins emergency telephone lineman repairing the lines and replacing the glass insulators on top of telephone poles. Seems the local young sharpshooters enjoyed using the glass insulators for target practice. When the duties of the farm did not demand his full attention, Porter worked as a teamster for the Matkins General store. He took the eggs, milk, and produce that the other farmers had sold to the store to New Hampton in a wagon and sold them to local merchants. He would then purchase and deliver dry good and groceries back to the store in Matkins. Joe Goble owned and operated the Matkins store and his wife Ona Goble ran the switchboard. Marvin Thomas lived in a big house behind the general store and was associated with the business of running the General Store. The Methodist Church did not have a resident pastor but rather had circuit preachers that rotated amongst the various remote congregations. The Matkins location had the following buildings: The Methodist Church, Court House, General Store, switchboard, Doctor Treasure's office, voting booth, blacksmith shop, and the residents mailboxes mounted around a large wagon wheel. Matkins was located 5 miles south of New Hampton, Mo and about three miles west from SR69. Porter died at the home of his daughter Edith Leotha Johnston 3305 Clark St. Wayne, Mi.
