Biography

Isabella was the first wife of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada's first prime minister. They married in 1843. The marriage ceremony took place at the home of John Alexander Macpherson and his wife, Maria Sophia Clark in Hallowell (now Picton). The Rev. Mr. Macrae of St. Andrew’s Church, Kingston officiated.^[1]

She was born about 1809 (based on April 11, 1809 christening date) and was the daughter of Alexander Clark and Margaret Shaw.^[2] In 1843 she married her cousin John A. Macdonald, a young lawyer and politician, five years her junior. ^[3][4]
