Disputed Associations

Mary (Clarke) Gilman's birth and parentage have not been proven. Her father is almost certainly not "Sir John Clarke" of England; and her mother is not shown to have been Elizabeth Hobson. See Research Notes.

Biography

Mary Clark was born, probably Hingham, Norfolk, England, about 1590 (presumes she was age 24 at the time of her marriage), died Hingham, Massachusetts, 22 June 1681.[1] She was likely the daughter of John Clark of Hingham, Norfolk, who died in 1615[2] and Elizabeth Clarke, buried 1602, wife of John Clark.[3][4][5] They are also believed to be the parents of Margaret Clark, the first wife of of PGM immigrant Anthony Cooper.[6] Another sister; Rebecca Clarke was the first wife of PGM immigrant Joseph Peck.

Mary Clarke married at Hingham, Norfolk, 3 June 1614, Edward1 Gillman.[7] He was born, probably Caston, Norfolk, England, about 1587 (he was age 50 in 1637),[8] died Exeter, New Hampshire, between 14 January 1654/5 (deed) and 10 April 1655 (administration granted),[9] son of EdwardA Gilman (EdwardB).

In 1638 traveled from Hingham, England to Hingham, Massachusetts: Edward Gilman, wife, 3 sons (Edward, Moses and John), 2 daughters (Mary, married Oct 4, 1636 John Foulsham; Lydia, married Jun 19, 1645 Daniel Cushing).[10]

The family settled at Exeter, New Hampshire, where Edward died; Mary survived as his widow returned to Hingham and died there 22 June 1681.[10]

Research Notes

Likely father not a nobleman. Mary's birth and parentage have not been proven. Her father is possibly that John Clark, laborer, whose wife, Elizabeth was buried at Hingham, 1602.[25] This John Clarke is presumed the man buried 1615 at Hingham.[26][27][28]

Mary's mother is not shown to have been Elizabeth Hobson, sometimes referred to as "Lady Elizabeth Hobson."[29]

There is no evidence John had been knighted [30]

What is your pleasure? Should we sever Mary Clarke from the confused profile of the linked father [and mother] so that she can be linked to a more accurate, John Clarke of Hingham (uncertain)?

Seeking to clarify the profiles of John Clarke and Elizabeth _____, who are the unproven (uncertain) parents of Mary Clarke Gilman, Rebecca Clarke Peck, Margaret Clarke Cooper, and Jane Clarke. See Clarence Almon Torrey, "The Clark and Cooper Families of Hingham, England," The American Genealogist 13 (1936):151-54; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.

If there is some likelihood (without asking that this be researched) that Sir John Clark existed, I'd say yes. His profile is a rather confused one starting from the very beginning with DeCoursey's upload, with many name changes along the way.

It would definitely be cleaner to start her uncertain father John anew with correct info.

At creation, John Clark (abt.1558-1615) was essentially undefined--born England (no date), father John Clark, but he has been through many merges. He became "Sir John Clarke" after the Hingham dates and locations were merged into the profile.

The man of Hingham was certainly not a nobleman. He was a laborer in 1602 the burial record of his wife.

I also agree with the proposal to sever the current parents and start fresh with an accurate profile for the Hingham John Clark.

Several dates were changed by someone who just recently started with PGM profiles. (no offense intended to the recent starter)

Will someone please check them? Thanks.

looks good. confirmed the date changes are correct.
Thank you Jeanie.

And thank you to the person who did the update.

The mother of Mary Clark Gilman should be Elizabeth Unknown. There is no marriage record and she is known from her burial as Elizabeth wife of John Clark.
According to Threlfall in his research into immigrant Joseph Peck:

According to John Brooks Threlfall, in his research into the origins of immigrant Joseph Peck: Joseph Peck married first, at Hingham, Norfolk, England, on 21May1617, Rebecca Clark, buried there on 24 October 1637. Evidence exists indicating that Rebecca was the sister of Mary Clark, who married Edward Gilman at Hingham on 3 June 1614. It is thought that Jane Clark, who married Robert Kirby at Hingham 25 July 1616 and Margaret Clark, who married Anthony Cooper there on 25 July 1609 were also sisters; all thought to be daughters of John Clark, who was buried at Hingham on 6 June 1615, and Elizabeth Clark, wife of John, buried there on 11April1602. Anthony Cooper, Edward Gilman, and Joseph Peck were all early settlers of Hingham, Massachusetts. The parish registers for Hingham begin in 1601, but there is a record in the Genealogical Society of Utah's International Genealogical Index of a Rebecca Clark, baptized there on 21 May 1585, the daughter of Samuel and Martha (Lincoln) Clark. The ultimate source of this record is apparently a "Peck Family Bible," no further information given. The submitter of the record is now deceased. Suspicion is aroused, however, by the fact that family bibles usually give birth, not baptismal records. Also the baptism happens to be exactly 32 years prior to the marriage. John Clark, buried in 1615, was probably the son of Thomas Clark of Hingham, husbandman, whose 1593 will mentions a wife Elizabeth and children Valentine, Stephen, John, Elizabeth and Margaret. He was probably the grandson of Richard Clark of Hingham, whose will dated 20 August 1557 mentions a wife Margaret and children John, Thomas (relationship not specified but assumed to be son), Margery and Joan. He was probably the great grandson of Richard Clark, as Thomas Clark's will mentions a tenement which was formerly his grandfather Richard Clark's.

Mary seems to have acquired some siblings that do not fit this narrative and its doubtful that her father was Sir John.

Jeanie, what do you propose to do with this information from Threlfall? Are you suggesting that the birth date of Rebecca Clark-505 should be changed? what else? Or are you simply writing the comment as a way of documenting Threlfall? If this latter is the case, perhaps you could include some of the information into research notes on the various biographies involved? Just suggesting that perhaps something further needs to happen. Thanks.
Just a heads up for the other multiple profile managers before I start editing the profile. I'll give them a day or so to respond.
I understand, thanks for explanation, Jeane.
Clark-25806 and Clark-307 appear to represent the same person because: same person
[[Gilman-31|Ruth (Gilman) Cram (1735-1820) definitely does not belong to this couple Edward Gilman and Mary (Clark). She probably belongs to the Ruth Clark 1713-1785 (see below). I am disconnecting Ruth (Gilman) Cram and will reconstruct Ruth (Clark) Gilman (1713-1785)

There is no Lawrence Gilman on the list of this couple's children. He has no progeny listed here, perhaps he could be disconnected from these parents and merged into Gilman-93 (b.c.1561). Or does he belong with another family?

Ah! The wife of Edward Gilman was Mary Clark not Ruth Clark. Oh dear This is a mess. I am restoring the data for Mary Clark contained in the changes tab.

The list of children in the text does not agree with the list of children in the data. For instance all the Sarahs now go to Ruth. There are three Lydias that all go to the same Lydia. Would someone with this information in their database, please update the list in the text.

I don't see any merging that needs to be done here anymore, and am removing the needs merging note.

There is a Sarah Ann connected as daughter who was born in 1685 after the death of this couple. Hearing no objection she will be disconnected.

Jo covers it.....i agree

So, perhaps we should make the merges and either a) change the father's name to Jo or b) maybe the abbreviation Jo is unambiguous in the context of a late 1580s register??
