Nathan Clark was born in 1787 in Cornwall, Orange, New York, son of Reuben Clark and Mary Peppard. In 1809 Nathan Clark established the Athens Pottery Works in Athens, NY. The business was very successful, virtually monopolizing the pottery manufacturing in New York around the turn of the 19th Century. Nathan married Julia Nichols. They had three sons, Nathan Henry (died young), Edward Cabot, and Nathan Jr. Nathan Jr. took over the family business. Edward went on to found the Singer Sewing Machine Company and become one of the richest men in America.
