Biography

Edward Samuel Clark was born in Vermont on 15 May 1886, a son of Charles Stanford Clark and Rebecca Celinda Clark (maiden name Clark).

Edward Samuel Clark was married to Mabel DeGraux in Brattleboro, Vermont, on 27 July 1911. Edward's uncle, Rev. James S. Clark, officiated at their marriage.[1] He was living in Detroit, Michigan, at the time of the marriage.[2]

In January 1920, the U.S. Census recorded Edw. S. Clark and his wife Mable D. Clark, both 33 years old, living in Bloomfield (Oakland County), Michigan, with their four children, all born in Michigan: [3]

  1. Robert S. age 6
  2. Harriet L., age 5
  3. Norman E., two years and 6 months old
  4. Donald E., ten months old.

Edward's birthplace was reported as Vermont; his father also was born in Vermont and his mother was born in Massachusetts. He was a building contractor.[3]

The 1930 U.S. Census found the family of Edward S. Clark in Birmingham (Oakland County), Michigan. Household members were Edward S. Clark, 43, a building contractor; his wife Mable Clark, 44; and children: Robert, 16; Harriet, 15; Norman, 12; Donald, 11; and Carol, 7. Edward was born in Vermont to a father born in Vermont and a mother born in New York; Mabel was born in Massachusetts to a father born in Belgium and a mother born in French Canada; and the children all were born in Michigan. They owned their home, which was valued at $70,000. The record indicates that Edward and Mabel had been married 25 years (this is inconsistent with the marriage record).[4]

The 1940 U.S. Census recorded Edward Clark and his wife Mabel, both age 54, in Birmingham, Michigan, with their unmarried children Norman E. Clark, 23, Robert E. Clark, 27, Donald E. Clark, 21, and Carol Clark, 17. Edward was born in Vermont, Mabel was born in Massachusetts, and their children were born in Michigan. Edward worked as a general contractor in the construction industry. Edward and his two older sons had 4 years of college; Donald had 3 years of college. Mabel and Carol both had completed 4 years of high school. All household members had lived in Birmingham 5 years earlier (in 1935).[5]
