Biography

He was born about 1740 and his parents were Elizabeth Summers and James Clark, pioneer of Augusta County, Virginia.

During the American Revolutionary War he served as a Private in the Virginia Militia. For his service he was granted 330 acres on the Greenbrier, in the District of Augusta, Botetourt and Greenbrier, Virginia. [1] His grant was adjacent to James Ewing and John Henderson, [2] who were settlers living on Indian Creek from the head near Union to the mouth on the border of Monroe and Summers counties. His land is believed to have been near Salt Sulphur Springs below Union.

Alexander Clark married about 1763 in Cowpasture, Augusta County, Virginia to Sarah Lafferty (1744-1809), daughter of Rebecca and Ralph Lafferty, a prominent family of Cowpasture. Their children included ...

His nephew Samuel Clark lost his father when only two years old, so Alexander and his wife Sarah helped to raise him. Samuel later became a Major.

About 1785 he moved his family from Cowpasture, Augusta County, Virginia to Greenbrier County, Virginia.

In 1794 Alexander Clark made his Last Will [3] and passed away in Greenbriar County, Virginia (now Monroe County, West Virginia).

His wife Sarah made her last Will in 1808 which was recorded in Monroe County, Virginia (now Monroe County, West Virginia). [4] At the time of her death, Sarah owned five slaves and personalty valued at $1,389.

About 1865 part of Virginia went into the formation of West Virginia.

Alexander was born in 1736. He passed away in 1794.

Elizabeth Shinn married a Samuel Clark. She was from NJ and died in IL. I don't believe she should be attached to Alexander Clark. This unmerged match status of Alexander Clark should be changed and a merge done. thanks.
