Biography

(Following info also in Families of Early Milford, p 204-05) "Deacon Clark of Milford by George Clark Bryant. p40-41

"Ensign" George Clark (George), baptized at Milford, CT, Aprl 30, 1648 (MC1), died there, July 19, 1734, in his 87th year (T.S.); married first, DEBORAH GOLD, born____, died at Milford, June 2, 1697 [1st Ch. Rec., baptism of the child Silence June 6, 1697, adds "the mother of this child died quickly after it was born--June 2, 1697"], daughter of Major Nathan Gold of Fairfield, CT; married second, REBECCA (Phippen)(Baldwin) PriNCE, born Feb. 12, 1656/7 (in Boston)[Boston VR], baptized March 1, 1656/7 [1st Chu Boston], died Oct. 17, 1712, aged about 54 [TS, Milford], dau of Gamaliel and Sarah (Purchase) Phippen of Boston, MA, and widow of Samuel Baldwin and Job Prince; married third, PHEBE (Nichols) KNELL, baptized Nov 12, 1671 [probably at Stratford; Woodbury Ch Rec.] died between Aug. 30, 1732 [MLR 8:29] and Apr 4, 1734 [date of George Clark's will which makes no provision for her], dau of Caleb and Ann (Ward) Nichols of Stratford and Woodbury, CT and widow of Isaac Knell.

He was chosen Ensign of the Milford train band, May 1693 [CT Col Rec 4:93]. He served as Deputy for Milford to the General Assembly, Oct. 1708, May and Oct 1719, May and Oct 1720, Oct 1721, May and Oct. 1722, May and Oct 1723, May and ct 1724, and May and Oct 1725 [Ibid, 5:66; 6:106, 141, 173, 206, 270, 304, 329, 367, 410, 440, 483, 515, 553].

September, 1696, George Clark Junr and his wife Deborah were admitted to the First Church, Milford, and a marginal note states the Deborah, wife of "Insigne Clarke" died "2 June 1697." Her father, Nathan Gold, whose will calls her wife of Geroge Clarke, was a leading citizen of Fairfield: Assistant of Connecticut Colony, 1657, 1659-87, 1689-94; a Patentee of the Royal Charter, 1662; Major of Fairfield County troops, 1673. The mother of Deborah Gold is not positively proved. Nathan Gold married his first wife, the widow Martha Harvey, by 1655, and in 1657 she was under the medical care of Gov. (Dr,) John Winthrop, and probably did not long survive. No evidence has been seen that she ha any children by God. By May 14, 1660, Gold had married a young widow, Sarah (Phippen) Yeo, and it appears certain that she was mother of all five of his children with the possible exception of Deborah. If born 1660, and married at seventeen, she can be placed as the eldest child of Nathan and Sarah (Phippen) (Yeo) Gold, and such placing would make her a first cousin of Rebecca Phippen who became the second wife of Ensign George Clar. [The American Genealogist, 17:1-3, 15]

Rebecca Phippen married first, Samuel Baldwin of Milford, born about 1645, died Jan. 16, 1671/2, son of John and Mary Badwin. Administration on his estate was granted, Feb 12, 1673/4 to his widow Rebecca [New Haven County Court Rec. 1:72]. The second Mondday in June 1696, Joseph Baldwin, brother to Samuel, claimed part of his estate; Samuel Eells as attorney to Mrs. Rebecca Prince of Boston, formerly widow of Samuel Bldwin, alleged the estate to be insolvent [Ibid., 1:240.]. She married second, Job prince of Boston, bapt Aug 22, 1647, died 1694, son of John and Alice (Honour) Prince. She had seven Prince children [The American Genealogist, 17:12-13.], of whom son Job married his step-sister, Deborah Clark. mrs. Rebecckah Clark, dismissed from the First church in Boston, was admitted to the Miford Church, Nov. 30, 1701.

Ens. George Clark became a freeman of Milford in 1669 and was admitted to the church on March 12, 1686.
On August 15, 1688, his father, Deacon George conveyed land at Milford to his son, George Clark.
He was chosen Ensign of Milford "trainee band" and commissioned in May, 1693.

The third wife of Ensign Clark, Phebe Nichols, married first, Dec 28, 1697 [Woodbury VR], Isaac Knell born at Stratford, February, 1655, died Nov 2, 1708, in his 57th year [sic, TS, Stratford], son of Nicholas and Elizabeth (____) (Knowles) Knell. Nicholas Knell had a grant of an island from the Town of Stratford which was called Knell's Island. He had a daughter Elizabeth who married John Mitchell of Woodbury. On June 9, 1725, John and Elizabeth Mitchel of Woodbury quitclaimed all their interest in "A Certain Island Lying in Stratford harbour near the place where Stratford River falls into the sea unto Mrs Phebe Clark of Milford wife to Ensign mr George Clark....Which Island above said is generally Known & Called by the name of Knells Island" [Stratfor L.R. 4:164]

Records show he was a deacon and often a Deputy or Representative to the General court of Connecticut. Lived all his life at Milford. Will on record in New Haven, dated April 24, 1734.

He was one of seven appointed to a committee regarding the purchase by Milford of a township lying at Wiantanuck (New Milford) and his name is on the "Indian Deed to the Proprietors of New Milford".

On January 28, 1726/7, HENRY BOTSFORD sold to Ens. Georg Clarke, Jr. for 10 pounds, land "in ye one bitt & ye two bitt Indian Purchases."

On Aug. 30, 1732, Ensign George Clark of Milfor, "Gentleman," in consideration of "Good will Love and affection which I bear unto my youngest Daughter Abigail Curtisse wife unto Ebenezer Curtiss Junr of Stratford" conveyed a certain lot of land to her; "And further Also Phebe Clark wife of ye above sd George doth...Relinquish all ye Rights of Dowry yt she ever Might or could in any wise Ever have unto any of ye above Granted premises" and she signed the deed with her mark [MLR 8:29-30]. This lot was sold Mar. 27, 1736, by Ebenezer Curtiss and Abigail his wife of Stratford, with mention that it came to her "by her father Mr George Clark of ilford lat Decd" by deed of a gift dated Aug. 30, 1732 [Ibid., 9:1-2].

This will of George Clarke of Milford, dated Apr. 24, 1734, proved Aug. 19, 1734, mentions his deceased daughter Elizabeth Talcott; daughter Abigail Curtis wife of Ebenezer Curtis ("only excepted from an equal part and in lew thereof to have all the chettells left at my death which her mother brought to me, as may appear by my book of accounts"); son

George Clark Jr., son of Deacon George Clark & Sarah, was bpt 30 April 1648; d. 19 July 1734; m. (1) Deborah Gold; m. (2) Rebecca Phippen; m. (3) Phebe (Nichols) Knell.[1]
