Biography

Stephen was a son of Dr. Theophilus Clark and his wife Martha. He was born in Canterbury, Connecticut, on February 1, 1744/5.[1]

Stephen Clark married Elizabeth Hovey in Canterbury on May 9, 1770.[1]

Children

Children of Stephen and Elizabeth Clark include Jasper Clark, recorded as born in Canterbury on 14 November 1770.[1] No additional records for children of Stephen and Elizabeth were found in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records.

Miss Elizabeth Clark, daughter to Mr. Stephen Clark and Mrs. Elizabeth his wife, died Sept 24th 1795 in the 19th year of her age, and was buried in Carey Cemetery in Canterbury.[2]

Merritt Clark's manuscript genealogy listed five sons of Stephen Clark:[3]

  2. Asahel
  3. Stephen
  4. Festus
  5. Erastus

Merritt Clark did not report any life details for these sons.

Research Notes

A Stephen Clark was recorded in Wallingford, Rutland County, Vermont, in 1788.[4]

A list of civil officers for the state of Vermont published in The Vergennes Gazette and Vermont and New-York Advertiser (Vergennes, Vermont) on November 1, 1798 identifies Elisha Clark as Judge of Probate for the District of Rutland in Rutland County and lists Stephen Clark, Elisha Clark, and Enos Clark as justices of the peace in Rutland County.
