Excerpt of Clark Family of Inglewood
"This book will concentrate on the descendants of Charles Thorpe Clark who was an Agricultural Labourer in Lincolnshire. He met and married Eliza Goulsbra the daughter of BenJamin Goulsbra and Ann Padley.
Eliza Goulsbra was an unmarried mother of a daughter Margaret. Charles Thorpe Clark and Eliza were married 7 Jan 1866 at Tetford, Lincolnshire.
Charles and Eliza Clark set up home in Driby, Linconshire where they produced five children, Charles Thorpe, Sarah Ann, Rose, Harry and Lily. The NZ government were actively recruiting farm labourers in Lincolnshire and the Clark family and the Codd family took the opportunity.
The Shipping news states the "Hurunui" left England 22 Nov 1875 and arrived in New Zealand waters 23 Feb 1876. (93 days sailing). The "Hurunui" was under the control of Captain Boyd.
According to a newspaper report this was a fine sailing vessel which was supposed to be very fast, but because of the very fine weather this could not be tested, the only storm throughout the entire voyage was off Cape Egmont, when the ship had to hove too for 12 hours.
Ironically when there were so many passengers on this ship coming to the Taranaki area, Margaret Goulsbra the illegitimate daughter of Eliza was not allowed to come to NZ.
The family had to walk from New Plymouth to Inglewood which took two days, with the older children helping to carry the younger ones. The night was spent sleeping against logs in the bush and huddling together to keep warm.
Charles Thorpe Clarke had a property on the Dudley Road, Inglewood and the Codd family was close by. Charles then set about breaking in the land to make a living for his family.
Life was very hard for these families, fetching water from the river until water was connected later in Inglewood. Two more children were born in Inglewood Amos (Moss) and Ellen. All the Clark children survived into adulthood, most went to the Dudley Road School, Inglewood. Inglewood had only been formed in early 1875, called the Moa District.
Eliza ran a boarding house in the late 1890s until her death in 1903 from Pernicious Anaemia. Charles Thorpe Clark was admitted to Poirua Mental Hospital 17th May 1916 suffering from Senile Dementia and his physical condition was weak. He needed assistance to dress and feed himself. No visits from family or friends were recorded from his admission until his demise on 28 July, 1918. What a sad end to a long and hard life.
Family members described him as a very hard man on his children making them work very hard on the farm."[1]
