Middle initial; approximate year of death[2]

Year of birth given as about 1872 [3]

1881: CENSUS: appears on the census for Burnside, Crichton, Edinburgh, East Lothian Scotland with his mother and older sister, living in the household of his widowed grandmother. John is 7 months old and was born in Crichton.

1920 PASSENGER DECLARATION: John Clark, departed Glasgow, arriving Canada c 16 November 1920, (form completed 27th of October 1920), on the Cassandra. Aged 40; male, married, engaged in farm work. Born Crichton, Midlothian, Scotland; Roman Catholic. Reason giving for coming to Canada, was as a settler. It appears as if he had lived in Canada before - at Mrs. Phillips, Bell View, ???, arriving in Quebec in June/Jan 1910, and arriving back in Britain at Liverpool, from Montreal in 1911. He left Canada for family reasons. At the time of the Passenger Declaration, (1920) he had L12 in his possession. He was able to read and write, and spoke English. The 'government' had paid for his passage, and he intended to settle permanently in Canada. His destination in Canada was the home of James McManus, Russell Manitoba, his father-in-law. His next of kin in Britain was his mother: Mrs. Clark, of Murray's Farm, Gilmarton (sic). He did not suffer from either epilepsy or tuberculosis; physical description/deformity: gun shot wound to right foot.

John Clark was a police officer for Russell, Manitoba, Canada and then filled the same job in Canora, Saskatchewan. In Russell, there was a 9 pm curfew (for children only?). Niece Nell McManus Gorman remembers her cousin John Clark making sure that the children were home by 9 pm.
