Biography

Joseph Clark is believed by family myth to have changed his last name from Markham to Clark upon immigrating to Canada and then the United States.

Research Notes

Walter Joseph Markham left England under some very suspicious circumstances and when he reached the United States his assumed the name of Joseph George Clark. Anyone in this country researching him would begin with the Clark moniker, since all the subsequent relatives were named Clark. It is only recently I confirmed that he was actually a Markham, although it certainly could have been accomplished earlier via letters and photographs from a sister in England.

Letters and pictures sent by family in Buckinghamshire England suggest that Joseph Clark was actually Walter Joseph Markham, who left England under furtive circumstances.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:

Clark-30458 and Markham-7708 appear to represent the same person because: Markham is parent's last name.

Hi David,

You are right - they are the same person but it is a little complicated. So how do I merge them so any American researchers can find the Clark name and any British researchers will be able to locate him through the Markham name? Talk about split personalities! Thank you for any suggestions you can provide! Lynda
