Biography

William Clark, son of Joseph Clark and his unknown first wife, was born about 1645, and died September 30, 1683. He was commander of a sloop taken by the government during King Philip's War (1676), and was also captain of a company of militia. On August 1, 1679, he petitioned the Assembly concerning several Indians captured by him and his company in time of war. The case was referred to the town councils of Newport and Portsmouth. In 1677 he purchased land in Boston Neck, Noth Kingston. William Clark married Hannah Weeden, daughter of William Weeden; she died in 1722.[1]

William is not the son of Joseph Clarke's second wife Margaret (Turner) Clarke who was at one time erroneously attached to this profile as his mother.

Research Notes

Earle K Peckham gives a date of birth as 30 Sept 1683 in Westerly.[citation needed]
presumably this comment was intended to say "death" not "birth"??

The second Research Note should have been posted on the profile of Wiliam's son Wiliam. The first Note should read death, not birth, or deleted entirely if the source said birth. While Morrison said William was "of Jamestown" tHere is no evidence that William was born at Jamestown - the claim is unzreasonable. Jamestown was used for pasturing sheep in the 1640s William's father Joseph Clarke resided in Newport.
