Euphame de Clavering was a daughter of Robert Fitz Roger, Knt., Lord Fitz Roger, also called Robert de Clavering, and Margery la Zouche.[1][2] Euphame's date and place of birth are unknown and are estimated.
Euphame married Ranulph de Neville,[2] also known as Ranulph (or Ralph, Randolph) Fitz Robert de Neville, son of Robert de Neville and Mary Fitz Ranulph,[3] before 12 March 1280/1 ("date of lawsuit") [1] They had five sons and four daughters:
Robert, Knt.,[1][4] aka "Peacock of the North", married Ellen ____ and died ca. 1319,[5] killed in battle[3]
Ralph, Knt., 2nd Lord Neville, married Alice de Audley[4] and had issue; he died 5 August 1367;[1][5] captured in battle in 1319 with two brothers[3]
Alexander, Knt.,[1][4] captured in battle in 1319 with two brothers and died 15 March 1366/7[3]
John[1][4][5] captured in battle in 1319 with two brothers and imprisoned again in 1322[3]
Euphame was likely still living in 1281, but her date and place of death are unknown. She was a benefactress of Thornton Abbey, and was buried at Staindrop, Durham.[1][3] Ranulph married second to Margery de Thweng (unknown date) and they had no issue.[1][3] Ranulph de Neville died shortly after 18 April 1331,[3] and was buried in the Choir at Coverham Abbey, Yorkshire.[1][4]
Euphame's brother John Fitz Robert and his wife left Euphame's children the lands of Clavering, Essex; Aynho, Northamptonshire; Iver, Buckinghamshire, and Blythburgh, Suffolk. These lands were in the hands of Euphame's son, Ralph, 2nd Lord Neville, by 1345 and were either settled on John FitzRobert's death (ca. 1332) or on the death of their brother Edmund (unknown date). Both brothers had died without male heirs; however, John had a daughter, Eve (died 1369), who was excluded for some reason.[3]
Research Notes
Other Children
Richardson and Complete Peerage name nine children (listed above). The MedLands database lists five additional children, all citing the same source: Reginald Fitz Herbert's Original Pedigree of Tailbois and Neville. The pedigree lists "Robertum Neuille primogenitum sine prole obiit, Anastasiam, Radulfum, Mariam, Alexandram Neuille de Raskell, Johannem, Johannam, Margaretam, Alesiam, Thomam archidiaconum Dunelmie, Anastasiam secundam, Willelmum" as the children of "Ranulfum de Neville".[5] Daughters Ida and Euphame are not included in the MedLands list, but the following five children are:
The pedigree cited by MedLands is probably incorrect and these five children should eventually be disconnected as children of Ranulph and Euphame, but more research is needed before doing so.
