Biography

Mary Elizabeth Clay Belcher BIRTH 17 Apr 1734 Fairfax County, Virginia, USA DEATH 4 May 1793 (aged 59) Wythe County, Virginia, USA BURIAL

Elizabeth Clay was the daughter of William Mitchell Clay and Martha Runyon.

William Clay was a volunteer in Virginia's militia prior to the Revolutionary War. In 1774, Virginia, except along the seaboard, was still a wilderness, especially in the west. Hostilities between the colonists and Indians were escalating daily. The governor, Lord Dunmore, asked the House of Burgess (colonial assembly) to approve and pay the troops to go in and end this. Known as "Lord Dunmore's War", William, 66, became its first casualty. He was killed by an Indian while hunting with a friend, for game, at Point Pleasant, Mason, West Virginia. Though William didn't live to see it, the coming battle pushed the Indians further west and opened up more land for colonial settlement.

By this time, William's daughter, Elizabeth, was a middle-aged woman of nearly 40 years of age. She had married Isham Belcher in 1759, in Chesterfield (made from Henrico county). At the time of her father's death, their family appears to have started moving west eventually settling in Wythe, Virginia. Many of their children continued later to move onto Tazewell, Virginia, Ohio, and Tennessee.

Mary Elizabeth Clay was born about 1735 in Virginia, the daughter of Mitchell Clay Sr. and Martha (Lewis) Clay. She married Isom Edwin Belcher Sr. Mary Belcher passed away about 1793.

The bio gives three birth years, first "about 1735" then the specific April 17, 1734 listed on FindAGrave but I still haven't found their source then a Ged.com with birth of near "1736". I realize they're all close but I'd like to know if there is one with more credence so I can document it on the other sites as well bc she keeps getting moved and edited on FamilySearch. Thanks for any help here. Becky

The Research Notes point out that:

"Some trees incorrectly show her parents as Henry Clay and Lucy Marshall, but that Henry has a will mentioning ten children and not mentioning any Mary Elizabeth." But the Biography still reflects that information. Should it be updated?

So, does no response for almost a year mean I should do it?

This profile was identified to have Data Error 310: Mother was dead before birth. The death date of 1789 is before the birth of her child Robert Belcher born in 1794 and needs to be corrected.
