Biography

Sarah was born about 1674. She is the daughter of William Clay and Judith Corker. She passed away about 1729. [1]

Research Notes

Sarah Clay, wife of George Barlow, is not the daughter of William Clay. She is the daughter of William's brother, John Clay. This mistaken link to William Clay probably arose from the comment in Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight County, Virginia by John B. Boddie. He states that William Clay left two daughters, Elizabeth who married John Brantly and Sarah who married George Barlow.[2] He was wrong.

John Clay died intestate about April 1685. His son-in-law, John Brantley, requested an appointment as Administrator of his estate on behalf of his wife, Elizabeth (Clay) Brantley, and her sister Sarah Clay.

  • Clay, John: Dying intestate, administration reqested by John Brantley in behalf of his wife and her sister Sarah Clay. May 1, 1685. R. Dec. 9, 1685. Security, William Evans, William Baldwin.[3]

John and his daughter Elizabeth were named in the will of brother William Clay. William's own daughter Elizabeth was also named. I believe this helped lead to the confusion as to which Elizabeth married John Brantley.[4]

Both Elizabeth Clay Brantley and Sarah Clay are being removed as daughters of William Clay and added as daughters of his brother John Clay.Strutton-11 16:46, 28 January 2022 (UTC)

Sarah (Clay) Barlow isn't the daughter of Judith (Corker) Clay. A Surry Co., VA, deed identifies Judith (Corker) Clay's sole heir as her daughter, Elizabeth Parsons. An abstract of the deed is on the profile page for Elizabeth (Clay) Parsons.
