Biography

Southern Cross of Honor Henry DeLamar Clayton, Sr was a prominent Alabama attorney, politician, Redeemer judge, and college president. He also served as Colonel of the 1st Alabama Infantry[1] and as Major General in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War, commanding a division in the Army of Tennessee in the Western Theater.[2] After the war, Clayton resumed his law practice. In 1886, he accepted a position as the President of the University of Alabama, a role he held until his death.[3]

Final resting place in Fairview Cemetery, Eufaula, Alabama.[4]
