Note: Thomas was previously added as the son of Richard Cleaver (c. 1733-1774) and Elizabeth Perkins, but removed because this Richard Cleaver died in 1774, shown through his will which was proved that year (and did not name a son called Thomas).

Occupation: Boatman

Biography

Thomas was born in about 1776 in Hillmorton,[1] according to the 1851 census. He was baptised on 11 Mar 1776 to Richard and Elizabeth,[2] his parents likely being Richard Cleaver and Elizabeth Gennings.

The banns of marriage for Thomas Cleaver and Sarah Pickard were first published in Exhall in 1801, but there is no record of marriage[3]. Banns were again published in Exhall for Thomas and Sarah in 1803[4], with the marriage occuring on July 22, 1803.[5] Thomas was described as boatsman and Sarah as a spinster, both of the parish, and both signing X. The witnesses were Sarah Pickeard ~ and Wm Henson (the parish clerk).[6]

Thomas and Sarah had the following known children (Thomas was described as a boatsman in the later records):[7]

  • Elizabeth Cleaver was baptised on 19 Jul 1807 in Bedworth, to Thomas and Sarah.[8]
  • Thomas Cleaver was baptised on 27 January 1811 in Bedworth, to Thomas and Sarah.[9]
  • John Cleaver was baptised on 21 Jul 1816 in Bedworth, Warwickshire, to Thomas and Sarah of Exhall.[10] He will have passed away as a brother called John was born.
  • Richard Cleaver was baptised on 21 Jul 1816 in Bedworth, Warwickshire, to Thomas and Sarah of Exhall.[11]
  • Sarah Cleaver was baptised on 3 May 1818 in Bedworth, Warwickshire, to Thomas and Sarah of Exhall.[12] Sarah married Charles Leivers, a boatman.[13]
  • Abraham Cleaver was baptised on 18 Nov 1821 in Bedworth, Warwickshire, to Thomas and Sarah of Bedworth.[14] Abraham was a boatman like his father.
  • John Cleaver was baptised on 28 Mar 1824 in Bedworth, Warwickshire, to Thomas and Sarah of Exhall.[15]

1851 Census: Locks, Hillmorton.[16] Thomas described as 75 (1776) Boatsman Pauper, born Hillmorton.

Thomas Cleaver (of Hillmorton) was buried on 26 Nov 1854 in Hillmorton, age 78 [c. 1766 birth].[17]

Research Notes

Notes on marriage by Chapman-17127, 15 April 2020.

There was another couple in Hillmorton called Richard and Elizabeth Cleaver having children at a similar time. A Richard Cleaver (of Hillmorton) married Elizabeth Jennings (of parish) on 7 Feb 1773 in Newbold-on-Avon.[18] These are likely Thomas's parents.
Thomas and Sarah were previously attached to a son, William Cleaver, but as his birth was recorded as 1786 (so being born when Thomas was 10) he has been detached.
