Biography

Roger Cleveland

George A. Martin showed that Roger was the ancestor of the Southern Clevelands. This is contrary to the information in the three volume "History of the Cleveland Family" by Edmund James Cleveland [George A. Martin, "Virginia Cleveland Ancestor Discovered", NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY QUARTERLY, Vol. 46(3) Sept 1958, p.152]

The problem with the Alexander / Roger Cleveland lineage of Virginia,[1] has been studied for many years by Cleveland genealogists. There is no guaranteed lineage for this family after 1780. Reliance on family trees on the internet and Ancestry, even this one, is very sketchy as there is just not enough sources to verify these claims.

What is ascertained is that ROGER CLEVELAND is the immigrant from England for the Clevelands of Blue Run, Virginia.[2]

Roger and "Dorcas" Cleveland

"Roger arrived in Virginia before 16 Nov 1670, originally in Gloucester County (Records of Gloucester, VA, Vol. II, 1948). He purchased land in Old Rappahannock County, which became Essex (which became Spotsylvania). Roger is mentioned in the Minutes of the Council and General Court of Colonial Virginia on 16 Nov 1670 (Vol. 58, p. 254). George A. Martin in "Virginia Cleveland Ancestor Discovered" (National Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 46, Sep 1958, p. 152) showed that Roger was the ancestor of the Southern Clevelands.

Children

His children (John, Elizabeth, and Alexander--who married Milly Presley and advanced the Southern line) were all born in Gloucester County. Abingdon Parish records show that Alexander was baptized 31 Jul 1687. "

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Roger by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Roger:

Cleveland-4060 and Cleveland-190 appear to represent the same person because: same name and same tree for several generations with same details and spouses all the way down.

I believe Alexander Cleveland 1659 is not the son of Roger Cleveland, but possibly the son of Alexander Cleveland.

This looks possible. What is the source of this research? Thanks

There seem to be at least two families with parent-child mismatches, some of different generations.
The majority of researchers into the Southern Cleveland families consider Roger Cleveland the immigrant ancestor. This individual may be the same as that Roger. Further research is required.
