Biography

In 1327 he was still a minor: in that year Edward III received the fealty of Peter de Perschute, son and heir of Nicholas de Perschute, "for a moiety of the manor of Norttbourn in Sussex... which the said Nicholas held from the heir of Thomas de Kailly under age and in the king's ward etc, by the service of three knights' fees...."[1]

In 1349 he held the manor of Denver as heir to the Cailly family.[2]

The King Sues Adam At Michaelmas in 33 Edward III, 1359, at Norfolk, the King, as guardian of Robert Bernak of Plessynghall, a minor, sued Adam de Clifton, Kt, for the next presentation to the church of Atleburgh. The pleadings contain this pedigree:[3]

At Easter, 37 Edward III (2 April 1363), again at Norfolk, the King sued Adam de Clifton for the next presentation of the church at Attelburgh. This pleading contained a more extensive pedigree, which is in blue text:[4]

  • Hugh de Albini Earl of Arundel, who died without surviving children in the time of Henry III, married Isabella;
  • Mabel who had:
    • Robert de Tateshale;
      1. Robert de Tateshall, died in the time of Edward I, had:
        1. Robert de Tateshall who was dead and had no surviving children;
      2. Mabel (aka Emma) de Tateshall who had:
        1. Thomas Cailly who was living in 2 Edward II, but was dead and had no surviving children:
        2. Margaret (or Margery) who had:
          1. Adam de Clifton;
      3. Joan de Driby, died 3 Edward III, had:

At Norfolk, at Michaelmas in 7 Henry IV (3 April 1406), Matilda Cromwell sued Margaret, formerly wife of Gilbert Talbot, Kt, for the next presentation to the church of Attilburgh, appurtenant to the manor of Plessinghalle, and she said Hugh Daubeney, Earl of Arundell, presented Peter Giffard in the time of Henry III and his four sisters were his heirs, and gave the descents below:[5]

Margaret stated the Earl presented Godfrey Giffard in the reign of Richard I. The jury found in Margaret's favour as the church was not appurtenant to the manor of Plessinghalle. Margaret's claim was from Constantine Clifton. The descent she provided is added below in blue:[5]

  2. Mabel, Plessinghalle was part of eldest sister Mabel's purparty and descended through her to:
    1. Robert de Tateshale, heir, granted the manor of Plessinghalle to William Bernak, Kt, who presented in the reign of Edward III;###Robert de Tateshale who was dead and had no surviving children;
      1. Emma de Tateshale who married Osbert Cayley and had:
