Biography

Inquirer (Perth, WA : 1840 - 1855), Wednesday 3 May 1843, page 2
BIRTH. At Australind, on the 22nd ult., the lady of ROBERT WILLIAMS CLIFTON, Esq., Sec-retary to the Chief Commissioner, of a daughter.[1]

FUNERAL OF MISS C. CLIFTON. Profound regret was expressed when it was known that Miss Christina Clifton, of Australind, had passed away on Thursday morning last. The deceased lady, who was in her 75th year, had been in indifferent health for some time and passed away after a short illness. For the last 55 years Miss Clifton has held the position of postmistress at Australind, and preceding that, for many years the position had been held by a relative of the same name. The deceased lady is a granddaughter of the late Marshal Waldock Clifton, who in 1841 was practically the pioneer of the Australind district. The late Mr. Robert W. Clifton, father of deceased, had a family of 11 children, of whom Miss Christina Clifton was the eldest surviving. Five children are still alive, two of whom still reside at "Upton House," Australind, the early home of the family. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at 3.30 from the residence of Mr. J. B. Clifton, the Rev Davies-Moore officiating. The chief mourners were: — Mr. and Mrs. R. Cecil Clifton, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Clifton, Mr. and Mrs. A. G. Clifton, Mr and Mrs. F. J. B. Clifton, Miss Louise Clifton, Mr. J. F. Johnston, Mr. Herbert Johnston, Mr. Walter Johnston, Mr. Arthur E. Clifton, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Clifton, Mr. and Mrs. Loftus Clifton. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Partridge, S. Fry, E. Rose, John Fry, Dr. Joel and W. L. Owen. Many floral tributes were laid upon the grave as tokens of esteem in which the deceased lady was held. The funeral arrangements were in the hands of Messrs. W. Brittain and Son.
