William Clifton was born in Alverstoke, Hampshire, England.

William Carmalt Clifton was born on 5 Jul 1820 in Alverstoke, Gosport, Hampshire, England. His parents were Joseph Bingham Clifton (1797 - None) and Elizabeth (Lawrence) Bingham (1797 - 1843). He was christened on 5 Jul 1820 in Putney, London, Surrey, England. [1]

He married firstly Ann Emily Mary (Snepp) Clifton on 16 Jul 1846 in Holy Trinity, Brompton, Middlesex, England.

Their 3 children were:

  1. Anne Emily Fanny Clifton (1847 - 1894)
  2. William Edward Clifton (1848 - 1907)
  3. Louisa Clifton (1850 - 1927)

After Ann died in 1850 he married secondly Sophia Harriet (Adcock) Clifton in 1851. [2]

Their 5 children were:

  1. Ethel (Clifton) Hassell (1857 - 1933)
  2. Ada Marian (Clifton) Innes (1861 - 1898)
  3. Gervase Clifton (1863 - 1932)
  4. Francis Bingham Clifton (1868 - 1870)
  5. Robert Clifton (1870 - 1870)

He was the P&O Steamship agent in Mauritius.

He moved to Western Australia arriving in February 1861. He became manager for the P&O Steamship Co in Albany, Western Australia. His uncle Marshall Waller Clifton had immigrated to Western Australia in 1841.

By Dec 1884 he had left Albany and returned to Highfield Buckinghamshire.

William died on 29 Sep 1885 at the age of 65 in Highfield, Lane End, Bucks, England. [3]

William Carmalt Clifton was a landscape artist whose work is in the Western Australian Museum. [4]
