He married firstly Ann Emily Mary (Snepp) Clifton on 16 Jul 1846 in Holy Trinity, Brompton, Middlesex, England.

He was the P&O Steamship agent in Mauritius.
He moved to Western Australia arriving in February 1861. He became manager for the P&O Steamship Co in Albany, Western Australia. His uncle Marshall Waller Clifton had immigrated to Western Australia in 1841.
By Dec 1884 he had left Albany and returned to Highfield Buckinghamshire.
William died on 29 Sep 1885 at the age of 65 in Highfield, Lane End, Bucks, England. [3]
