Charles came to Western Australia with his parents on the Parkfield, arriving on 19 March 1841.[1]

At Australind, on the 21st Inst., by the Rev. Mathew Fletcher, A.M., GEORGE SMITH, ESQ., second son of Charles Henry Smith, Esq., late Storekeeper of Malta Dockyard, to RACHEL CATHARINE, fifth daughter of M. Waller Clifton, Esq., F.R.S., M.C.
At the same place and time, also by the Rev. Mathew Fletcher, (the ceremony having been previously solemnized at Belvedere, according to the forms of the Roman Catholic Church, by the Rev. T. Donovan, R.C.C..) CHARLES HIPPUFF CLIFTON, ESQ., seventh surviving son of M. Waller Clifton, Esq., to MARIA GLYNN, the adopted daughter of Thomas Little, Esq., J.P., of Belvedere.[2]
Charles was a civil servant in 1851, was with the Native Police in Bunbury and in 1853 was Postmaster. He was Superintendent of the Convict Establishment at Guildford 1853-1872 and Perth Prison from 1873. In 1885 he was the Perth Registrar General.[1]
