Biography

Henry was born 29 Jul 1846 in Peoria County, Illinois. He was the son of Samuel W Clifton and Anna Reed.

In 1850 he was living in Peoria county, part of, Peoria, Illinois.[1] The household included Simon W Clifton age 28 born in Ohio, Anna Clifton age 25 born in Ohio, Samantha R Clifton age 6 born in Illinois, Henry H Clifton age 3 born in Illinois, Lydia H Clifton age 2 born in Illinois, John B Clifton age 1 born in Illinois and Amos W Clifton age 4 months born in Illinois. Samuel was a farmer.

In 1860 he was living in Hallock, Peoria, Illinois.[2] The household included Samuel Clifton age 38 born in Ohio, Anna Clifton age 35 born in Ohio, Simentha Clifton age 15 born in Illinois, Henry Clifton age 13 born in Illinois, Lydia Clifton age 12 born in Illinois, John Clifton age 11 born in Illinois, Lovet Clifton age 1 born in Illinois and George Roberts age 20 born in Ohio. Samuel was a trader. George was a farm hand. Simon and Currance Reed lived next door.

In 1880 he was living in Hallock, Peoria, Illinois.[3] The household included Samuel Clifton age 58 born in Ohio, wife Anna Clifton age 56 born in Ohio, son Henry H Clifton age 34 born in Illinois, daughter Lovett M Clifton age 21 born in Illinois, son Elias J Clifton age 14 born in Illinois and son Leroy C Clifton age 10 born in Illinois. Samuel was a farmer. Henry was a farmer. Harrison Reed, Lyman Reed and Marion Reed lived nearby.

In 1885 he was living in Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa.[4] The household included Anna Clifton age 61 born in Ohio, Henry Clifton age 43 born in Illinois, Louie Clifton age 26 born in Illinois, Elias Clifton age 18 born in Illinois, Leroy Clifton age 16 born in Illinois and Harriett Johnson age 65 born in Ohio. Anna was a widow. Henry was a teamster. Elias was a fireman. Harriet was also widowed and was likely Anna's sister born 19 Nov 1820.

Henry H Clifton and Mattie Ballard were married 19 Jan 1890 in Mahaska, Iowa.[5] He was the son of S W Clifton and Anna Reed. He was a teamster. She was the daughter of W M Ballard and Mary A Jewell. It was the first marriage for both.

In 1900 he was living in Troy Township (excl. Albia city), Monroe, Iowa.[6] The household included Henry Clifton age 52 born in Illinois, wife Mattie Clifton age 28 born in Illinois, son Wilbur Clifton age 9 born in Iowa, son Elmer Clifton age 7 born in Iowa, son Charles Clifton age 5 born in Iowa, daughter Emma Clifton age 3 born in Iowa, son Willie Clifton age 1 born in Iowa and boarder John Lynch age 29 born in Ireland. Henry was a coal miner. Mattie was the mother of 5 children, all living. John was a coal miner.

In 1910 he was living in Ottumwa Ward 6, Wapello, Iowa.[7] The household included Henry Clifton age 64, wife Mattie Clifton age 37, son Wilbur Clifton age 19, son Elmer Clifton age 17, son Charlie Clifton age 15, daughter Emma Clifton age 13, son William Clifton age 11, son John Clifton age 9, son Fred Clifton age 7 and daughter Mabel Clifton age 2. Henry and Mattie were born in Illinois; the children were born in Iowa. Henry was a watchman on the railroad. Mattie was the mother of 9 children, 8 living. Wilbur was a laborer working odd jobs. Elmer was a wagon driver for a retail grocer. Charlie was a laborer for the railroad.

In 1920 he was living in Ottumwa Ward 6, Wapello, Iowa.[8] The household included Henry H Clifton age 73, wife Mattie M Clifton age 46, son William H Clifton age 20, son Fred H Clifton age 17, daughter Emma M Clifton age 23 and daughter Mabel Clifton age 12. Henry and Mattie were born in Illinois; the children were born in Iowa. Henry was a laborer. William and Fred were working on a section for the railroad.

He died 5 Jun 1920 in Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa.[9]

He is buried in Shaul Cemetery, Ottumwa, Wapello County, Iowa.[10]
