Biography

The name of the wife of Obadiah Bowen was Mary; however, her LNAB is Unknown. She has long been said to be Mary Clifton, however, there is no evidence that this is true. The most recent scholarly article on the Bowen family rejects the name Clifton.[1] She was also previously connected as the daughter of Thomas Clifton Esq and Anne Halsall. Even if Mary was a Clifton, she could not have been a daughter of this couple; they had a daughter Mary who was born too late and married someone else. She has been said to be a daughter of Thomas Clifton of Rehoboth. This is also unsubstantiated, and he also is not a son of Thomas Clifton Esq. Thomas Clifton and Anne Halsall have been disconnected as parents.

Birth

Born: About 1625.
Estimate based on marriage about 1648.
Suggestions that she was born on 18 Jan 1628 on Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts come from the FamilySearch Ancestral File and are incorrect.

Marriager and Children

Married: Obadiah Bowen before 1651,[citation needed]

presumably in Swansea, Bristol Co. Massachusetts.

Death

Died: 18 FEB 1697 in Swansea, Bristol Co., MA

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:

I found a source listing her last name as Clifford:

"Lancaster, Pennsylvania, U.S., Mennonite Vital Records, 1750-2014", Ancestry Sharing Link - Ancestry Record 60592 #979873 (accessed 22 December 2021): Obadiah Bowen (1627-1699), son of Richard Bowen, married 1646 Mary Clifford, daughter of Thomas Clifford; their son Obadiah (1652-1710) married Abigail Bullock; and their son James married Elizabeth Guernsey.

The male line of descent matches what is here on WikiTree, but I wasn't able to track her line any further. Maybe somebody else can,

This is an old error which can be found in many sources. There is no evidence of her LNAB.

Profile Managers: Would you please change her last name at birth to Unknown? Based on the 2001 article in The American Genealogist, her last name at birth is not Clifton, and there is no evidence that she is a daughter of Thomas Clifton (who has already been removed as her father).

Thank you.

I don't know if "Colonial Families of the USA, 1607-1775" is considered to be a valid source but...page 61 shows that "Obadiah, b. in Swansea, Wales, 1st Sept 1627; m. about 1649, MARY CHILTON. He was one of the first settlers of the new town of Swansea, Mass, named by him in honor of his birthplace." If this is a valid source, then we have a LNAB for her and proof that her parents are not any Thomas Clifton.

The article in The American Genealogist 76 (2001), page 287 makes it clear that her last name at birth was unknown.

Ok. That's something I don't have access to. What I was pointing out with the "source" I listed was that she wasn't a CLIFTON but a CHILTON but if American Genealogist (I don't know how to do Italics) says "Unknown" I'll go with that. Thanks.

I know this has probably been asked several times, but how do we know that Mary Bowen is a daughter of this Thomas Clifton and not this one? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Clifton-251

I get really nervous when I see descents from nobility or royalty when other dubious links in the same family have already been disproven.

It might be worth looking into getting this profile assigned to a project that can manage this type of question.

Re This profiles parents: (1) Not Thomas and Mary (Longbothom) Clifton. Thomas Clifton and Mary (Longbothom) Clifton only had two documented daughters, Hope and Patience. They were Quakers. Thomas was Mary (Longbothom) Butterworth's 2nd spouse.

(2) As it's shown on the profile for Anne (Halsall) Clifton, wife of Thomas Clifton: their daughter Mary Clifton, b. 1650; m. Mr. Wilkinson; buried 15 Sep 1704, Gedney-Hill, Lincoln, England.

Detaching incorrect parents. There is no actual evidence that her LNAB is Clifton and it should be changed to Unknown. She certainly is not the daughter of Thomas Clifton Esq. and Anne Halsall. There is also no evidence that she is the daughter of Thomas Clifton of Rehoboth (who is unrelated to the other Thomas Clifton Esq.).

Is she attached to the correct parents now? Her relationship to her mother is marked "non-biological." From previous notes it looks like that was from a different mother, who was detached.

This is the wrong Mary Clifton attached to Obidiah. The biography is fine, but the parents are incorrect. The bio shows her birth in Massachusetts not Lancashire. More likely, her father was Thomas Clifton of Yorkshire (1606-1681) who had 2 wives, one was Mary's mother, possibly first name Ann and a second wife who was born Mary Longbotham, <Longbotham-3>, who was the widow Butterworth <Henry Butterworth #27) when she married Thomas on 18 Jan 1640. Mary Clifton probably had 2 half-sisters: Hope (1643-1681) and Patience (1646-1692), and many Butterworth siblings. See Thomas Clifton's bio in Find-a-Grave #36258994, which references an article in the New England Historical Genealogical Register of Winter 2018.

Mary Marg (Clifton) Bowen is shown in Family Search profile's to be born in Clifton Lancashire England and her death in Rehoboth, Bristol Massachusetts Bay

Family Search profile's lead me to Mary Margaret Clifton parents as, Father: Thomas Richard Clifton I, mother: Lady Anne Halsfall (LBBB-9DT) originating from Halsfall Burscough Lancashire England. Is there a possible second marriage to be added?

Removed wife of father as mother of Mary. Marriage date of father to wife was long after proposed birth of Mary. First changed to non biological, but profile continued to incorrectly list siblings as "half." Also removed place of birth as Rehoboth, Ma, wasn't formed at that time. These discrepancies were noticed by others and brought to my attention by private message and comments here.

Trying to remove Mary from Thomas 142. Can't seem to find a way to do that. Any suggestions?
posted on Clifton-250 (merged) by Bette (Pye) Wing
I am going to remove Mary (Clifton) Bowen as a daughter of Mary Longbothom. She may well be a daughter of Thomas Clifton, but it would be by a first wife (and Mary Longbothom would be her step-mother.

And Mary (Clifton) Bowen could not have been born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts, because that town did not exist until well after 1628. It seems more likely that she was born in Rehoboth, Nottinghamshire, England.
