Biography

Martin Jones Clifton was born about December 30, 1810 in Virginia. He was the son of John Clifton and Nancy Jones.

Martin married three different times and had a total of 21 children.

(1) FIRST MARRIAGE to Susannah Barrett about 1828 in Virginia and by the 1850 Census, they were living in Kiser, Russell, Virginia. [1] God blessed this marriage with the following children: John Milton, Elias C, Martin Lowell, Ervin A, Nancy Elizabeth, George Riley, Emanuel Anthony, Jackson M, Emory S, Sarah Jane and Martha Ann.

He was widowed 6 June 1856 when Susannah died of palsy in Russell, Russell county, Virginia at about age 46.[2]

(2) SECOND MARRIAGE to Delilah Matilda Martin 24 Aug 1856 in Virginia [3] and by the 1860 Census, they were living in Honaker, Russell County, Virginia.[4]

God blessed this marriage with the following children: Andrew David, Sarah Catherine, Thomas Jefferson, Mary Ellen, Henry Franklin, Matilda Alice and James Edward and by the 1870 Census, the family was living in Hancock County, Tennessee.[5]

(3) THIRD MARRIAGE to Rebecca Miles 24 May 1879 in Hawkins county, Tennessee.[6] God blessed this marriage with the following children: Horace Watterson, William Jesse and John Dean and by the 1880 Census, the family was living in Jackson County, Tennessee.[7]

Martin died 30 March 1890 in Surgoinsville, Hawkins County, Tennessee and was buried in Simmons Cemetery in Hawkins County.[8]
