Samuel Weston Clifton was born on 27 May 1859 in Hutt Valley, Wellington, New Zealand, son of Richard Clifton (1832–1858) and Mary Ann Southee (~1825–1925).[1]

His siblings were:

Samuel (19) married Frances Alice Ann Allice Kells (16) (born on 29 September 1862 in Wellington, Wellington, New Zealand; daughter of Henry Kells and Sarah (Hume) Kells) on 14 February 1879 in Thorndon, Wellington, New Zealand.[2] Their children were:

  1. Nellie Florence Hume Clifton (19 December 1879 – 19 May 1958)
  2. Samuel Henry Clifton (6 December 1881 – 16 July 1956)
  3. Arthur Harley Clifton (4 August 1884 – 29 July 1962)
  4. Horace Wilford Hume Clifton (9 February 1887 – 2 March 1957)
  5. Frances Alice Ann Clifton (2 November 1888 – 29 March 1973)
  6. George William Clifton (22 June 1894 – 14 September 1978)
  7. Grace Clifton (1895 – 18 April 1948)
  8. John Richard Clifton (21 November 1896 – unknown)

Samuel died on 28 December 1939 in Reikorangi, New Zealand, aged 80.[3] He was buried in Waikanae Cemetery.[4]
