Laura Elizabeth Josephine Clifton was born on May 31, 1856 in Fremantle, Colony of Western Australia, daughter of George Clifton (1823–1913) and Eliza Naylor Roe (1834–~1920).
Laura (21) married Orbell Henry Oakes (26) (born on June 19, 1851 in Hawkedon, Suffolk; son of Orbell Pamplin Oakes and Julia (Evans) Oakes) on November 22, 1877 in Weymouth, Dorset, England. Their children were:
- Henry James Lionel Oakes (1879–1944)
- Orbell Oakes (1880–1915)
- Laura Eva Oakes (1883–1974)
- George Clifton Oakes (1889–1933)
- Robert Claude Oakes (1897–1916)
