Susannah was born about 1828 in Gallia County, Ohio, the daughter of William Cline and his wife Jane (Woten) Cline. In 1845, when she was about 17 years old, she married John H Bird [sic] in Gallia County.[1] On 2 March 1846, her parents deeded property of about 40 acres of land in Perry Township, Gallia County, Ohio, to Susannah, her heirs and appointees (no mention of husband, which was unusual for the time period).[2] On 28 August 1847, John Bird and Susannah, "his wife" sold this same acreage to Henry Bane for $100.[2] This was likely just before they relocated to Jay County, Indiana, where they were found in the 1850 Census, with two children born in Indiana.
Susannah died at the age of about 73 in 1901.

Research Notes
Although her married name is spelled "Bird" on both her marriage record AND on the Gallia County land deed, it is consistently spelled "Burd" on all census from 1850 on, and on her grave marker. However, both Susannah and her husband signed the Gallia County land deed with their "mark", indicating that neither could write (and perhaps not read) at that time.
