Biography

Birth

Zacheus Clough was born in Salisbury, Massachusetts, on 17 Feb 1691/92, the son of Thomas Clough and Ruth (Connor) Clough,[1] (See the Research Note below.) He was baptized at Salisbury on 5 Aug 1711.[2]

Marriage

Zacheus Clough married Sarah Page at Salisbury, Massachusetts, on 21 Jan 1713/14.[3]

Residences

According to Speare, Zacheus and Sarah, "went to Kingston and their farm was a part of the town that was set off and called Poplin and is now Fremont, N. H. Zacheus owned land in Salem, N. H., and he was in Brentwood for a time, a parish that was set off from Exeter, N. H., in 1742."[2] But they recorded all their children at Salisbury, Massachusetts, the last in 1740.[4] Furthermore, Poplin was never part of Kingston; it was set off from Exeter in 1764.[5]

Will

Zacheus Clough made his will on 15 Dec 1752. He names his wife, Sarah; his sons, Jabez, Zacheus, and Benjamin; his daughters, Hannah Whitcher, Betty Morrill, Sarah Sanburn, Ruth Brown, Tabitha Clough, and Judith Huntoon; and his grandson Moses and granddaughters Mary, Sarah, and Miriam, children of Jabez. His wife Sarah and his son Jabez were named as the administrators. The will was proved on 11 Aug 1757.[6]

Death

Zaccheus Clough died at Exeter, New Hampshire (in that part that became Poplin in 1764 and Fremont in 1753) on 30 Jul 1757.[2][7]

Research Note

Several FamilySearch.org records give Zacheus' birth date as 17 Dec 1691. This is a misinterpretation of the record, as transcribed in the Salisbury vital records, which records his birth on "17:12m:1691." The 12th month of 1691 under the convention of the time was February 1691/92, not December 1691. (Bloom-1124 01:47, 12 August 2019 (UTC))

Britain shifted from the Julian to Gregorian calendar in 1752. So a birthdate in 1691 should not be effected. Furthermore, Clough-868 and the record you linked to list a birthdate in February, not December. The calendar shift would not have caused that. Normally the birth records would spell out the month, not list it as "17 month 12, 1691." It is unfortunate that Family Search does not have an image of the original record. The transcriptions are often wrong. If you could get a copy of that original record and it really said what you claim then I would be convinced.

Note that this is an orphaned profile that I adopted to manage. I don't change adopted profiles unless I have proof of an error, especially in cases like this where sources are referenced.
