New England Adds Another to "Large Family" From Boston Sunday Post Woman's Section: March 11, 1917[1]
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Clukey of dexter, Me., have been the parents of 13 children, nine of whom are now living. They do not believe in race suicide, and they also hold to the belief that a good old-fashioned family of healthy children is more desirable than wealth as reckoned in dollars and cents.
Mr. Clukey, who is a prominent farmer, is one of the many thrifty citizens of Dexter. He was born in St. Joseph, Quebec, and came to this town 53 years ago. he was married when he was 18 years of age to Miss Mary Ronco of Dexter, whose birthplace was Hallowell.
Like a majority of the townspeople, Mr. Clukey was employed in local woolen mills when a young man, but some 20 years ago he believed the farm superior to life in the mills. He purchased a farm near North Dexter, where he has since resided. He has tilled the farm successfully , and it is now one of the best in this section of Penobscot County.
Though the mother of 13 children, Mrs. Clukey still insists that she should be a real helpmate, and sticks to her employment as a weaver in the mills of the Dumbarton Woolen Company in this town, where her average weekly wage is $15 per week. She is considered one of the most skillful if not the most skillful weaver, employed in the mills. She lives with relatives in the village during the week, passing the week-end at the farm at North Dexter.
Funeral services for Paul Clukey, 77, were conducted Monday morning at St. Ann's Catholic church by the Rev. C. J. Enright.
Mr. Clukey passed away Friday afternoon at his home on Maple street following a long illness. He was born in St. Joseph's Canada, but came to Dexter with his parents when he was a baby, and has made his home here ever since. For over fifty-five years he was employed in the woolen mills in this town.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary F. Clukey, six sons, Ralph of Dover-Foxcroft; Harry, of Waterville; Roy, of Sangerville; Franklin, Delphis and Albert of Dexter; three daughters, Mrs. Ronco and Mrs. Joseph Clukey of this town and Mrs. Theron Micue of Clinton.[2]
There are at least 3 Paul's of the same age in the Dexter, Maine area. Most Clukey families are very, very large and have overlapping children names. I'm breaking up the research notes by wife to help figure things out.
