Biography

Jacob was born in about 1807, presumably in Schenectady, New York. He is inferred to be the son of Nicholas Clute and Helena (Lena) Schermerhorn who was born 17 June 1807.[1]

Jacob F. Clute married Jemima Winne.[2][3] Their children included Jacob Winne Clute, who was a mayor of Schenectady, New York.[3]

As of the 1850 U.S. Census, Jacob Clute, age 43 and a farmer, was head of a household of in Ward 3 of Schenectady, New York, living with Jemima Clute, age 41 (his wife). He owned real estate valued at $8,000. Other family members in the household who can be assumed to be their children were Jerome Clute, age 19, also a farmer; Sarah Clute, age 16; Elizabeth Clute, age 11; Nicholas Clute, age 6; Jacob Clute, age 2; Henry, age 1. Elizabeth and Nicholas had attended school that year. Other household members were William Clute, age 30, a farmer (presumably a relative of Jacob Clute), and Anne McGinnis, a 24-year-old woman born in Ireland who may have been a servant.[4]

In the 1860 U.S. Census, Jacob F. Clute, age 53 and farmer, was a head of household residing in Ward 3 of Schenectady, New York. He held real estate valued at $15,000 and personal estate valued at $3,000. Other family members in the household were Jemima Clute (his wife), age 51; Elizabeth A. Clute, age 20; Nicholas M. Clute, a farmer, age 16; Jacob W. Clute, age 13; and Henry Clute, age 11. Children Nicholas, Jacob, and Henry had attended school during the year.[5]

He died some time before his wife, who was described as his widow at her death on 23 February 1868.[2]
