Biography

Per "History of Windham in New Hampshire (Rockingham county) 1717-1883" by Leonard Morrison; Daniel Clyde, was the emigrant ancestor of the Windham Clydes, tradition says, was born in Clydesdale, Near the beautiful river Clyde, in Scotland, in 1683. He emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland, and settled in Londonderry, New Hampshire, in the part which is now known as Windham, on the farm at present owned by Olinthus A. Simpson. The time of emigration is uncertain, but tradition and circumstances seem to fix the date at about 1732, or a little previous.

Some of Daniel's children were born in Londonderry, Ireland. He married Esther, daughter of Hugh Rankin, an emigrant to Londonderry from the country of Antrim, Ireland. If she was his first wife, which is hardly probable (Leonard Morrison's speculation), she must have married him while quite young in Ireland, as her parents emigrated in 1722. She was born in 1706 and died February 16, 1779. She was a woman of worth and possessed a strong religious character. Daniel was born 1683 and died June 4, 1753 and age 70 years.

Daniel's children:

Joseph (born 1722 in Ireland) married Margaret Moffitt

Hugh (born 1724 in Ireland) married Sarah Moffitt

John (born 1726 in Ireland) married Mary Moffitt- no children

Daniel (born 1728 in Ireland)- no wife or children

Ann (born 1730 in Ireland) married Capt. David Gregg, the seaman April 6, 1756

Samuel (born April 11, 1732 in Windham) moved to Cherry Valley, New York

Mary (born 1735 in Windham) married Mr. Parker of Litchfield and after his death Col. James Gilmore of Windham

Nancy (born 1740 in Windham) married Mr. Stuart- No children

Agnes (born June 28, 1744 in Windham)

Daniel had a younger brother Michael, who subsequently followed him to America and settled in Pennsylvania, though his intention was to join Daniel at Londonderry; but, landing farther South, and the facilities for traveling being poor and the distance considerable, he relinquished the plan and settled in East Allen, Pennsylvania, in one of the Scotch settlements. Communication was kept up between the families for a time. Michael died May 7, 1794, in his 84th year. His wife was Bridget, who died December 15, 1786, in her 66th year. Children of Michael: Ann, Mary (both married and died before Nov. 15, 1785), John (died 1826 at age 81), James (died in 1827), Margaret, Lettice, and Elizabeth.

Daniel Clyde built the second framed house in Windham on the Clyde homestead, now (1883) owned by O. A. Simpson where Daniel lived and died (pg. 245).

Daniel Clyde was a selectman in 1747 but his children were also involved in Windham local government. This included (pg.204-205):

1747 Daniel Clyde selectman

1750 Daniel Clyde constable and Joseph Clyde selectman

1751 Joseph Clyde constable

1755 Hugh Clyde selectman

1764 John Clyde selectman

1766 Hugh Clyde selectman

1777 John Clyde constable shared duties with Alexander Park

One of the constable's duties was to warn out of town paupers who were newly arrived. This gave those individuals who were warned 14 days to pack their belongings and leave. This relieved the town of supporting the person and their family as a public charge. They would be sent back to their last place of residence and if they could not afford to go back it became the responsibility of the town that was 'warning them out' (pg. 170-171). Other duties included collecting taxes and posting warrants for meetings (pg. 201).
