Note: He was about seventeen when the family migrated from Pennsylvania to Crawford County, Ohio. He became a farmer and purchased 80 acres of land from the government in 1829. Because he was the original owner of this land he received a patent which he signed on 13 April 1829. The land was located in Section 17 of Liberty Township (Range 17, Township 2S on the original land surveys).
After his marriage, he and Selly settled on his land in Liberty Township and lived there and Sandusky Township.

Type: Biography
Note: In 1853 he moved his family to Iroquois County, Illinois where some of his brothers had moved and bought land in Section 27 and began to farm it. He did not stay there very long (just a few years until 1856) because his father and, also, his older children back in Crawford County were demanding that he move back there. When he moved back, his father signed over the family farm to him. They then moved into the family house and cared for Asa.
He was the only son who stood by Asa in later years, while most of the other sons moved away when they could. He also was the only son who was not a heavy drinker. He was an active worker in the M.E. church for forty years.[5]
