The eldest child of Alexander and Elizabeth Cobb was Rutha. She was born in South Carolina, probably Abbeville County on December 10, 1804. She married John Thames on December 20, 1820, in Bibb County. Rutha gave birth to a total of 17 children, all of whom survived infancy. all but one married.A newspaper article in the Birmingham News, dated August 11, 1963, stated that Rutha was a "pioneering horseback riding woman who managed to rear her family while riding many miles to deliver babies and treat measles..." From a historical and personal perspective, it is apparent that Rutha had a pretty hard life. Aside from the Civil War which tore the country in two, she lived to see 3 of her children die, one in battle and one murdered, her husband murdered, one brother murdered, and one brother lynched. All of this must have taken its toll, but no narrative survives to attest to her iron will, with the exception of her life span of 81 years. It could probably be said about her back in those early days that she was a very well respected woman. If the doctoring story is true, then she definitely had the reverence of those around her. I do know that she has the admiration of her descendants today. [1]
