COBBLEDICK. On the 17th April, at Toorak, Melbourne, Robert Cobbledick, late of Summertown, aged 77 years.[4]
Obituary
Mr. Robert Cobbledick, a former resident of Summertown, died on Monday at Toorak, Melbourne, where he had been residing since retiring from the active control of his well-known market garden at Uraidla, about seven years ago. Mr. Cobbledick, who was 77 years of age, was until his removal to Victoria one of the best-known residents of the hills, and was held in the highest esteem by a wide circle of friends. He was a pioneer of the market gardening industry, and met with much success besides helping many others by example and advice. He was born at Tapley's Hill, and was taken from there by bullock team to Uraidla, which became his home. In his early boyhood he was employed in his father's garden, which is still known as Cobbledick's Swamp. At the age of 12 he commenced driving a team of six bullocks, carting vegetables and timber to Adelaide across the Mount Lofty Ranges before any roads were made. He also had the honor of carting the first load of peat soil and flower pots to the Adelaide Botanic garden. Both the soil and the flower pots were the products of Cobbledick's Swamp. Mr. Cobbledick rendered many valuable services to the community. Among the positions he held at different times were deputy returning officer for Onkaparinga, member of the district Council, member of the board of advice, and district chief ruler of the Rechabite Order. He also conducted a night school and acted as district constable. He took an active part in establishing the East-end markets. He leaves four sons, two daughters, and a number of grandchildren.[5]
