Biography

Ludovicus Coben (sic) born in Herentals (Brabant) before 1636 & served as notary & treasurer in Albany & Schenectady[1]

"Lowes Cobes (Ludovicus Cobussen). Court Messenger, 1656, 59, 61, 64, 67. Secretary of Albany, 1668-73. Notary Public, 1673, 76. Schout (chief officer) of Schenectady, 1675, 77, 78, 80."[2]

Biography from Jonathan Pearson:[3]

  • "LODOVICUS, was b. in Herentals, in Brabant. He was Court Messenger in Beverwyck, as early as 1666; Notary Public and Secretary of Albany, 1668; Secretary of Schenectady in 1677. With Johannes Klein, his son-in-law, he purchased and settled upon the fourth flat, on the north side of the Mohawk above Schenectady. He also had a house lot in the village, on the north corner of Union and Church Streets. After his death, his widow, Alida Pieterse, m. Dirk Ofmulder and resided upon her farm on the fourth flat until 1698, when she leased it to her son-in-law, Tomas Smit "of New England," during his life time, saving that at her death, her granddaughter, Clara Klein was to have two morgens of said land according to the will of her grandfather, Lodovicus Cobes. He had two children, Maria, who m. first, Gerrit Janse, and secondly, Thomas Smit; and a dau. who m. Johannes Klein."

Also from Pearson:[4]

  • "With his son-in-law, Johannes Klein, who married his only daughter Maria, he purchased and occupied the Fourth flat on the north side of the river. This land was conveyed Sept. 26, 1683, by the Mohawk Sakemakers to Arnout Cornelise Vielè of Albany, in consideration of his many labors undertaken for the Indians, and is described as lying over against the Second flat, occupied by Jacobus Peek, and containing 16 or 17 morgens of land. It was called by the natives, wachkeerhoha. Dec. 11, 1684, the patentees of Schenectady conveyed it, together with a lapie by it, to Ludovicus Cobes and Johannes Klein, reserving a yearly rent of one skipple of wheat per morgen. On his death it passed to his widow and daughter Maria Klein.

Research notes: The above 2 excerpts, both from Pearson, provide conflicting information regarding the number of daughters Ludovicus had (two vs. one).

Listing of all Early Proprietors and Patentees of Schenectady, including "Lewis Cobes", living on the North side of the Mohawk River (Glenville), ca. 1664.

Death is post-July 1686, when he served as baptismal witness in Albany Dutch Reformed Church for Ludovicus, son of Jacobus Peek.
