Biography

Sarah was born in 1843. Sarah Cocke ... She passed away in 1932. [1]

From the Holden Progress, Holden, MO. October 13, 1932

The funeral of Mrs. Sarah Jane Hughes, who died on Tuesday of last week, was held on Thursday. Services were conducted at the New Liberty by Rev. Humphrey. The pall bearers were grandsons, Bowmer and Raymond Hughes, Archie and Russell Howerton, Grover Jones and Homer Hughes. The interment was made in the old “Strange cemetery”, a family burying ground on land which formerly belonged to the Hughes family. All of the children living were present at the funeral except one daughter in San Francisco, Cal., who could not come because of illness. Another daughter Mrs. Belle Tossell of New Mexico came to be with her mother during her last illness.

Sarah Jane Cocke, only child of Jester G. and Mary (Hanna) Cocke, was born in Cass county, Mo., Sept. 13, 1843 and passed away Oct. 5, 1932 at the age of 89 years and 22 days. At the age of two years she moved with her parents to Johnson-co. five miles southeast of Holden which vicinity has since been her home. At the age of twelve she was converted and united with the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Bear Creek of which she was one of the early members. On April 1, 1862, she was married to Dr. P. D. Hughes of Nashville, Tenn.; after their marriage they moved to their homestead, one-half mile north of her girlhood home, where she spent the rest of her life, thus having lived on the same farm for 87 years. Dr. Hughes passed away July 19, 1912. They were the parents of seven daughters and three sons: Mrs. Katherine Jones (deceased), Irby, Holden; Mrs. Belle Tossell, Deming, New Mexico; Baxter, De Soto, Kan.; Ella Howerton, (deceased); Mrs. Annie Pruitt, (deceased); Mrs. Eva Tackitt, San Francisco; Edward, of the home; Myrtle (who died at the age of four years); Mrs. Mabel Sharp, near Holden. There are also 24 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; five grandchildren are dead, one grand-son having been killed in France.

She was a pioneer mother of the truest type, who possessed those fine old virtues of courage and stamina which have built the kind of homes that have sent forth sons and daughters to be a blessing to the world. She reared her family with a never failing trust in God and never wavered in that which she believed to be her duty. With an ever-ready energy and vitality she met life’s battles with serene and calm faith. Gifted with a rare personality, her home breathed the hospitality of earlier days. Mother Hughes has passed on, but she left the world better and nobler for having lived and her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren rise up and call her blessed.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Baxter Hughes and family of De Soto, Kan., Mr. and Mrs. Bowmer Hughes, Emporia; Mr. and Mrs. Grover Jones and Will Jones, Carrollton, Mo.; Mrs. Gail Shikles, Mrs. Ray Jenkins, Maynard Hughes, Mrs. Chas. Spangler, Mr. and Mrs. Rheader and Mr. and Mrs. Felix Cook all of Kansas City.
