Note:

JOHN COCKRUM son of Matthew Cockrum, and grandson of William Cockerham of North Carolina, was born in Edgefield Co., South Carolina about 1776. The 1890 census brackets him as 1765-1784, and since John's first child was born in 1797, an educated guess places his birth at 1776. He married his wife Susannah Calloway while still in South Carolina and her age is bracketed the same as her husband's. They moved from South Carolina (apparently Greenwood County) in time for their eldest son Matthew Wesley to be born in Kentucky in 1797. They settled in Christian County in that part that became Todd County in 1816 and lived there until 1829 when they moved to Illinois.John and Susannah had ten children, five boys and five girls. John was illiterate and the Todd County records spell his hame as Cockram. On January 18, 1821, John and Susannah sold 21 acres on the Elk Fork in Todd County to Elijah Hightower for $138. The transaction was witnessed by their sons Matthew and Thomas (x their mark). In 1829 the Cockrum clan prepared to move to Illinois. Son Thomas sold his land (108 Acres) to Thompson M. Ewing for $125. Father John already moved to Gallatin County, named his son-in-law Garland Moore, as his attorney in fact to complete a land sale to John M. Henslow of 250 acres for $375. Deal completed October 21, 1829. On December 1, 1829 Johns teen-age son John was indentured to Garlant Moore, young John's brother Matthew and sister Malinda approving the indenture. Eldest son Matthew Cockrum with wife Sarah Gibson, led the family migration to Spring Garden, Jefferson County. Illinois, showing up in the 1830 census. Father John and mother Susannah were also there by that time. The rest of the family arrived in Spring Garden between 1831 and 1834. John died sometime before 1840 and that census lists Susannah as head of household. Susannah herself died sometime in the 1840's, and their graves have not yet been found. Children of John and Susannah were Matthew Wesley (b. 1797), William who died in Franklin County in 184l8, unmarried, Betsy (b. 1806-1808), Dolly (or Polly), Malinda, Susanna (or Susan) b. 1825, Matthew, Betsy, Thomas and Dolly (or Polly) were married in were married in Todd County, Kentucky, Dolly and Garland Moore were granted a lisence to marry on May 9, 1823, and were married on May15, 1823 per rites of the Presbyterian Church, permission was given by both parrents so they were apparently quite young. (No. 103, p. 11, lst Marriage book of Todd County, Reverand Stewart certifying. John and Susannah CALLOWAY were probably buried in the spring Garden area, and although their graves have not been found, they were no doubt buried in one of the small family cemeteries located in this area.

Known children of John and Susannah:

Matthew Wesley COCKRUM. Betsy (Wyatt) COCKRUM b. 1806 or 1808. Thomas COCKRUM. William COCKRUM who died unmarried in Franklin County Illinois in 1848. Malinda (Canaday) COCKRUM. John COCKRUM. Dolly or Polly COCKRUM. Henry COCKRUM. Susanna COCKRUM b. abt 1825.

NOTE: Dated 22 Feb, 2000: John Cockrum is recorded from Illinois State Museum: Journal of Quincy A WILBANKS, Moore's Prairie as listed as traiding with Wilbanks in his store. There is also an old Cockrum Cem in this area, however no records of wheither John and wife were buried here although it is probable that they wer (Jefferson County).

Moore's Prairie is in Jefferson County, the township lied right above Franklin County and over in the corner so would also connect to Hamilton? County. It was named after Andrew MOORE who settled there about the time that the Neals and others came up and settled around 1812.

The original land records show: COCKRUM, John Lot5SWNW 16 05S 02E 20.00 04-09-1845. COCKRUM, John Lot12NWSW 16 05S 02E 40.00 04-09-1845. COCKRUM, John Lot5SENE 16.055 02E 20.00.04.09.;1845. COCKRUM, John Lot1NENE 16.055 02E 40.00.04.09. 1845. COCKRUM,John Lot 8SWNW 16,055 02E 20.00.0409. 1845. COCKRUM, John Lot.8SENE 16.055 02E 20.00.0409. 1845. COCKRUM,John Lot9NESE 16.055 02E 40.12.0409 1845.

It looks as if a cemetery may be on the land where he lived althouth it mentions the heirs but does not mention a cemetery.

The old Cochrane Cemetery is located in Moore's Prairie = a way off the road , not in good shape with some buried there not accounted for.

Cockrum-473 and Cockrum-368 appear to represent the same person because: they share same death date, spouse, siblings.
Recent evidence from several relatives indicate that John's wife's maiden name was Ray or Wray rather than Calloway. I found a reference on Ancestry.com where susannah Ray had filed for a pension on John Ray. No dates for his death appeared on application. Further research needed. susan
