Biography

Temperance Josephine Coffey, born in 1817, was the daughter of Ashbury Marvel Coffey and Rachael Boone. She died July 17, 1877 in Howell County, Missouri.[1] Her father Ashbury Marvel Coffey was born in 1790 and died between 1848 and 1850. Her mother Rachael Boone was born in 1793.[2] Rachael Boone was the daughter of Johnathan Boone, the date Johnathan Boone left for Missouri is not known, he reached the forks of the Maries in this county in 1834 and entered land in the immediate vicinity of old Stony Point. Johnathan Boone's family consisted of his wife and at least five children, all of whom were married and some of whom had grown children at the time, they were: Jesse, Israel, John, Rachel the wife of Marvel Coffey, and another son whose name is not handed down.[3] Marvel Coffey married Rachel, the daughter of Johnathan Boone, in either North Carolina or Tennessee, Marvel Coffey and his wife Rachel were the parents of seven living children when they came here with the Boone colony in 1834. The seven living children were: Lavina, Elizabeth, Temperance, Irvin, William B., Squire, and Campbell Coffey. Marvel Coffey and his wife Rachel lived in the Stony Point settlement something like four years and until August of 1838 when they moved farther up the creek and bought land just south of Highway 42 on the west side of the Big Maries, where the family lived until the deaths of thier parents which occurred less than ten years thereafter.[4]

Temperance was married to James Marvel Orr on April 19th, 1836 in McMinn, Tennessee.

Temperance and James Orr sold land for $30.00 in Osage County, Missouri on April 9, 1842 to John H. Crismon.[5]

There are errors and omissions here. Rachel Boone Coffey was the daughter of Jesse Boone NOT Johnathan's. If you looks at the 1860 censes provided, you will see two sons named John, the younger is John M, the M is for Morgan and that was the name he used. He is listed in the 1870 censes along with his wife, Susan (Ginn). His youngest child was named after him and happened to be my Grandfather. A wonderful man. Temperance's husband's name was James MARVIN Orr.
