1820 Washington Co., MD page Christly Caufman 1 male under 10, 1 male over 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female over 45

1828 He’s mentioned as the father of Rachel Kauffman and living in Washington Co., MD in a newspaper article.

1830 Census Washington Co., MD - I believe he lived with his daughter, Ellen/Nelly and her husband, Dr. David Henry Ream. There was a man between 60-69 living with them. There was no elderly woman living with him, so it is presumed that Christian’s wife was dead by 1830.

1835 He’s mentioned in a newspaper article in Washington Co MD about having letters at the PO that needed to be picked up.

"Carolus George Heinrich KAUFFMAN Sr. was born about 1730. He died about 11 Nov 1816 in White oak Church, Lancaster Co., Pa. George kauffman ( -Nov 1816) settled in vincinity of Caledonia, Franklin Co. and Adams Co. He is listed among fourty other settlers having land under Maryland grant in 1752, Henry Kauffman, probably a son , settled up his estate Nov. 11, 1816. A legend related that he or his son George went to the mill for flour and was never seen agin. His hat was found and the current opinion was that he was waylaid by a jealous neighbor and killed and the body concealed. During the Revolution , George, Jacob, Henry, Frederick, and Christian Coffman were recorded as members of the eighth Battalion under Capt. Samuel Rodgers . Some if not all of these were likely sons of George Kauffman Sr. White Oak Church Lancaster Co. Pa. records show Carolus George Heinrick Kauffman and wife Susan Sopia having the following children : John George C-July 24, 1754, George Heinrich -C- 12 oct. 1756 and John Heinrich -C- May 4, 1758 ( I think these names would probably be John , George and Henry their father seemed to have gone by George)"

I have doubts that this Christian was the son of CHJ.  I believe that the Christian of Washington Twp., Franklin Co., PA and the Christian of Washington County, MD were two different people.  My Christian seemed to have moved back and forth between the two counties, which caused confusion.  The fact that some of the children of both Christian's had the same name surely doesn't help.

A biography on Dr. Daniel Ream that was written while Daniel was alive states that he fondly remembers his grandfather, "Christley" Coffman.  Daniel was born in 1830; therefore the Christian who died in 1822 in Washington Twp. couldn't have been his grandfather.

I found Christly Caufman in the 1820 Washington Co., MD census which lists a male under 10 and a female under 10.  This corresponds to the info I have.  The info for Christian Coffman in the 1820 Washington Twp., Franklin Co., PA doesn't match the info I have for his children.

Christian of Washington Twp., Franklin, PA left a will in 1822.  He names only a handful of children, including Elizabeth.  This couldn't have been my Christian because Elizabeth, daughter of my Christian, was already dead in 1822.

I think my Christian was born close to 1767 and that his siblings were, without a doubt, Jacob (born about 1769), Henry (born about 1773), and John (born about 1780) - all of whom lived in Washington County, Maryland. The birth years I got from the ages given in the census records.   Because of the birth years, these couldn't have been the sons of CHJ.

It is very possible that this Christian, and his siblings Jacob, Henry, and John, were the sons of a brother of Jacob (b. 1737).
