In 1907, Ida Surface wrote a letter to T.J. Coffman, the brother of her father, Sylvan Coffman. In it she asked him to tell her the whereabouts of her father. She said she was raised by her Baker grandparents until she was seven years old. She was the daughter of Sylvan's first wife, Ida Baker. Now she was married with a daughter of her own, and wanted to make contact with her absent father. This letter was found in the possessions of Sylvan's daughter-in-law after her death (and long after the death of Sylvan and son Daniel). It's not clear if it was ever answered.
