Lieutenant Emerson Cogswell Jr served with Middlesex County Militia, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.

Emerson Cogswell was born on February 12, 1742/3 in Ipswich, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay, and baptized there, 12 April 1743. His parents were Emerson Cogswell and Mary Pecker. [1]

He married Eunice Robinson on December 17, 1772. Together they had these children born in Concord: [2]

  1. Bridget Cogswell, b. April 25, 1774.
  2. Lucy Cogswell, b. April 27, 1776.
  3. William Cogswell, b. April 5, 1778.
  4. Emerson Cogswell, b. October 29, 1779.
  5. Eunice Cogswell, b. Sept. 20, 1781, d. Sept. 13, 1782.
  6. Martha "Patty" Cogswell, b. March 12, 1783, d. 24 Nov 1856.[3]

He married Anna Learnard on May 3, 1789 at Concord. Together they had these children born in Concord: [4]

  1. Hannah Cogswell, b. Jan. 7, 1791.
  2. Edward Cogswell, b. August 20, 1792.

He married Elizabeth Bateman on December 8, 1794 at Boston. Together they had these children:

  1. Eliza Anna Cogswell, b. August 5, 1797, d. 12 Jan 1892.
  2. Mary Cogswell, b. March 5, 1800.
  3. Eunice Cogswell, b. Feb. 2, 1804, d. July 20, 1890 in Winchendon.

He died on May 13, 1808 in Concord, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States and was buried at Old Hill Burying Ground, Concord, Massachusetts. [5] There is also an image at FamilySearch. The Concord Library site has an entry, stating the inscription reads "Emerson Cogswell died May 13, 1828 aged 64 years", and the marker condition is "chipped, cracked, flaked, discolored, oxidation, mower scratches" [6]

"A new organization of the militia was made in February, 1776, and Concord, Lexington, Weston, Acton, and Lincoln were assigned to the 3d Regiment. Oliver Prescott was then chosen Brigadier-General, Eleazer Brooks, Colonel of this regiment, Francis Faulkner, Lieutenant-Colonel;" ... "The following were the officers of the several companies:" ... "Location Concord, Captain George Minott, 2nd Lieutenant Emerson Cogswell" ... "June 27 1778. These men were sent to reinforce General Sullivan."...
