Based on her age of 80 at the time of her death, in 1769, Susanna would probably have been born in 1689.[1]
Susanna's marriage to William Buttler (or Butler), Jr., must have occurred prior to November of 1715, when their first child registered in Ipswich was born.
Susanna (_______) and William Butler, Jr., noted as being "of Chebacco," registered the following children in Ipswich:
William Buttler, husband of Susanna, died before mid-1723, when Susanna, the administrator of his estate, began filing receipts for amounts paid from his estate. For example, on 8 Nov 1723, she paid a debt he had incurred to Abraham Martin.[2] This is, therefore, probably "William Butler, Jr.," who died 25 May 1723, at an estimated age of 46. He was buried in the Old Essex Cemetery (previously the Chebacco Parish cemetery).[3] If he was about 46 in mid-1723, he would have been born ca. 1677. He would then probably have been "Buttler, William, son of William" who was born on 1 Jun 1677, in Ipswich.[4]
Susanna (_______) Butler, a widow, married Jacob Perkins in Ipswich on 10 Feb 1728/9.[5] They had the following children:[6]
Lucy, d.in infancy;
Francis.
Susanna Perkins, a widow 80 years of age, was buried on 1 Oct 1769, according to the Chebacco Parish Church records.[7][8] She is buried at the Old Graveyard, Essex, Essex County, Massachusetts, USA.[1]
Susanna Perkins died testate in Ipswich MA, probate on 31 Oct 1769 per Essex MA Probate Recs. On 8 May 1770, the property left to Susannah by Jacob was ordered to be divided as provided in Jacob's will (see Jacob Perkins/Essex Co. MA: Probate File Papers).
Research Notes
This Susanna Cogswell was previously given the birth information for Susanna Cogswell, daughter of John Cogswell and Margaret Gifford, born 5 May 1691, who married Jeremiah Parsons in Gloucester on 14 Dec 1724.
There is no record at Ipswich of Jonathan Cogswell and Elizabeth Wainwright having a daughter named Susanna. (These are the parents previously attached for her.)
There is no record of a Susanna Cogswell's birth in Ipswich in the proper range to be the wife of William Buttler, Jr. - and no record in Ipswich of William Buttler, Jr. (or any William Butler/Buttler) marrying a woman named Susanna. Obviously, however, a William Butler, Jr., did marry a Susanna.
There is an interesting receipt in the probate file, one from a Thomas Lazenby dated Boston, dated 4 Mar 1724 (? the paper in the image is curled over part of the year):
Then Recd of Jonathan Cogswell Twenty pound fower Shilling and Seven pence upon the Account of the Weddow Susannah Buttler and wich is in full of her Husband William Butler Account - Late of Ipswich Deseased.[9]
The fact that, on 30 Nov 1728, more than 5 years after William Buttler's death, Jonathan Cogswell, a yeoman of Ipswich, signed bonds of guardianship for William's children is suggestive of some relationship, either with the deceased William or with Susanna. The timing may have been the result of Susanna's impending marriage to Jacob Perkins, which occurred 10 Feb 1728/9.
Bond of Guardianship for Susanna Buttler, aged 11, to Jonathan Cogswell (Thomas Boardman and William Giddings as sureties) on 30 Nov 1728.[10]
Bond of Guardianship for Elizabeth Buttler, aged 9, to Jonathan Cogswell (Thomas Boardman and William Giddings as sureties), on 30 Nov 1728. [11]
Bond of Guardianship for William Buttler, aged 13, to Jonathan Cogswell (Thomas Boardman and William Giddings as sureties), on 30 Nov 1728.[12]
Bond of Guardianship for Jonathan Buttler, aged 7, to Jonathan Cogswell (Thomas Boardman and William Giddings as sureties), on 30 Nov 1728.[13]
Bond of Guardianship for Mary Buttler, aged 5, to Jonathan Cogswell, yeoman (William Giddings as surety), on 30 Nov 1728.[14]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Susanna by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Susanna:
Jonathan Cogswell's Will leaves 5 pounds to his daughter Susanna Butler. Elizabeth (Wainwright) Cogswell's Will leaves her daughter Susanna Butler "one of my gold rings and 5 pounds". These Wills both show that Jonathan Cogswell and Elizabeth (Wainwright) Cogswell had a daughter named Susanna Butler. Both these Wills are available on Ancestry and are referenced in "The Cogswells in America".
There is apparently no documentation for Susanna's having been born a Cogswell. Please see the Research Notes on the profile. Unless there is evidence for a different LNAB, I suggest it be changed to "Unknown."
