Excellent question! Sources are explained here in our help index.
For yourself and other living persons, they are their own proof. You can add birth certificates, marriage licenses etc if you like but sources are most important for proving genealogy of people no longer with us.
Along with birth certificates and marriage licenses, obituaries, death certificates, pictures of the grave marker with the birth and death date are good. You can reference sources in the profile or put them where it says add sources here
You can upload images of sources. You can also link to sources posted on the Internet.
It becomes more and more important as the person gets farther away in time from when they were living.

I love knowing my history and would love to learn more about where my family came from. I know some links, but other stuff I'm still trying to find. I think it's super exciting to work on a world family tree and find connections to everyone! I agree with the mission of the Wiki Tree community and will abide by the rules.
