Martha Coit Smith Avery died at the home of her son, Francis Smith, in Plainfield, NH in 1779. Her marriage to Avery Humphrey was an unhappy one,, according to her niece Mrs. Cady who wrote "she very unwisely married Humprey Avery, Esq. of Poquetannock, Conn. He made her presents, while courting her, that her money was made to pay for after her marriage. One was a beautiful worsted double gown to ride in, which was fashionable in those days. She discovered too late that she had fallen into bad hands. Her property was all wasted and she in later days depended on her sons for support. She was a pious, excellent woman." She must have left her husband Mr. Avery and come to live with her son Francis, because Avery did not die until 1788.
She married Avery in Sept 1763 in Plainfield, CT/
