Julius was born in 1837. He is the son of John Coit and Ellen North. He passed away in 1880.

He attended the University of North Carolina.

Julius Thornwell Coit married Elizabeth Euphrosine Shaver in 1866. They had a son John George Coit in 1867. Mother and son died.

He then married Dovey Jane Knox in 1871. They had children John Knox, Mary Johnston "Johnsie", Laura Hill and Rev. Robert Thornwell Coit.
