John Coit Jr (Deacon) either came to Salem, Mass from Wales with his parents or was born in Salem. There is conflicting information. His birthdate was probably around 1636, although from the recorded date of 1652 of his marriage to Mary Stevens, it might have been previous to that date unless he married at 16 yrs.
The family moved to Gloucester, Mass where John Coite, Sr. established a shipyard. In 1650, the family moved again to New London CT where Coite, Sr. established another shipyard. Although John Coit Jr. also received a land grant in New London, he remained in Gloucester where he took over the shipyard and family property there. He forfeited the New London grant. John Coit, Jr. was a shipbuilder of high repute and a man of considerable property.
John Coit Jr's residence in Gloucester was near his father's at the end of the neck of house-lots, now called Wheeler's Point. The father also owned considerable land on Planter's Neck, which his son may have inherited.
John Coit Jr died before Oct. 3, 1667 when a Mary Coit, who could be none other than his relict, married John Fitch.
John Coite Sr's will: John COIT died Aug. 29, 1659. Mrs. Mary COIT died Jan. 2, 1676, aged eighty. This may be regarded as almost a solitary instance of protracted widowhood for that day, our ancestors, at whatever age bereaved, having been much addicted to second, and even third and fourth marriages. If the age of Mr. COIT equaled that of his wife, they were more advanced in years than most of the early settlers of the town,--a couple to be ranked with Jonathan BREWSTER and wife and Walter HARRIS and wife, for whose birth we look back into the shadow of the sixteenth century. The will of John COIT (Aug. 1, 1659) provides for his son Joseph and two daughters, Mary and Martha; but he refers to four other children, two sons and two daughters, absent from him, and leaved them a trifling legacy "in case they be living."
John Coit Jr. is not mentioned in the will as he had already inherited his father's house and shipyard in Gloucester.
