Biography

Martha's exact birth date is speculative. Martha was born about 1644 in Salem Mass. Martha Coit ... She passed away in 1730.

Her parents John and Mary Jenners Coit first arrived in Salem from Wales, possibly as early as 1630 according to some records. The family moved to Gloucester around the time of Mary's birth. They then moved on to New London CT around 1650. The oldest sibling John Coit, Jr. remained in Gloucester to continue the family shipyard there.

She first married in 1662 Hugh Mould, who was involved in shipbuilding with her father and brothers. They had four children…Susannah, Mary, Christian and Jane. After Mould's death, in 1693 she married Captain Nathaniel White. No issue from that marriage.

Martha Coit Mould White is buried in the Old Burying Ground, Cromwell, Middlesex County, Connecticut, USA. Inscription on tombstone: "Here lyeth the Body of Mrs. Martha White Relict to Cap Nathaniel White Esqr Who Died April 15, 1730 Aged About 86 Years". Entered by A Fabry, May 8, 2014.

Whitney, the family name was Coite, shortened to Coit after arrival in America. In various records, the name is spelled as Coyte, Goyte, etc. depending on who the record taker was, what they understood they heard and how well they could spell.

Birth name may be Coyte. "[Nathaniel White] married second, Martha, daughter of John Coyte and widow of Hugh Mould; she died in

1730." - * No. 85, pg 70-71 - Hollister Family of America compiled by Lafayerre Wallace Case, MD 1886 - https://play.google.com/books/reader?id=5eNUAAAAMAAJ&printsec=frontcover&output=reader&hl=en&pg=GBS.PA1

Coit-245 and Coit-5 appear to represent the same person because: This is Martha Coit, wife of Hugh Mould. There will be several merges necessary from the uploading of this gedcom. Please check them.

Do we know for sure if Martha was born in Salem or Gloucester? Have found both in dubious records.

Also, although she is listed as dying in New London, she is definitely buried in Middletown. Anyone know what the correct answer is? She does seem to have married and lived in Middletown.

Thanks.
