Biography

John Coker was part of a Southern Pioneer Family.

John Coker and Margaret had a son William. William first appears on the tithable list in 1690 indicating he was over the age of 16. John Coker probably died about 1720 in Surry County, Virginia, His will was proven in 1720 in Surry County. [1]

This land was part of a patent granted to John Coker 20 Apr 1685. The land is situated between the Cypress Swamp and the main Blackwater in Lawnes Creeke Parish. [Detailed description is included in deed.] John Coker acknowledged the deed of conveyance along with his wife Margaret, who relinquished her right of dower. John signed and Margaret made her mark. Coker during his natural Life one hundred Acres of Land at my upper old plantation and after his decease his son Jno. Coker for Ever. I give unto my loving wife Margarett and to her heirs and Assigns for Ever all the rest of my Land that I am now possessed of And also I give my sd wife all Rest and Remainder of my Estate making her my said Wife my whole and sole Execux: in token of which I have hereunto set my hand and Seal May the 22nd, 1711 Signed Sealed and Declared to be the Last Will and Testmt: of ye Subscriber. John Coker: Sealed wth a wafer In the presence of us John Allen James Allen Arthur Allen At a Court held at Southwark for the County of Surry October the 19th 1720, The above, mentioned Will of Jno. Coker decd, Thus presented by Margarett Coker Exx: therefore who made Oath thereto and being proved by the Oaths of John Allen & Arthur Allen Witnessess thereto the same is Ordered to be recorded & is recorded by. Disputed Parents and Unverified Information

John has been detached as the son of Capt John Corker and Dorothea Bishop for lack of documentation. He should not be reattached absent primary source documentation and consultation with US Southern Colonies Project.

A John Coker left England and immigrated to the Colony of Virginia in 1636. [28]

He married a Margaret who has known connections to the Allen family and the gedcom upload states her maiden name was Clay without any documentation. No documentation for his birth in Dorset, England or that he married in Surry.

  • John Coker

Only child mentioned in the importacon list, the tithables list, the wills of Margaret and John Coker is a son named William.
